The good news of Christianity is the message of what God has done to save sinners through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This message stands at the very center of the Bible and at the heart of the church’s mission.
The Bible teaches that God created the world and everything in it. He is perfectly holy, righteous, and good. Human beings were created in God’s image to know Him, love Him, and live in fellowship with Him. As one historic catechism summarizes the teaching of Scripture: “Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy Him forever.”
Although God created humanity good, all people have sinned against Him. Sin is more than simply making mistakes. It is our failure to love God as we should and our tendency to go our own way rather than obey His will.
The Bible says:
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” — Romans 3:23 (ESV)
Because God is holy and just, sin separates us from Him and places us under His righteous judgment. On our own, we cannot repair this broken relationship with God.
The good news of the gospel is that God did not leave humanity without hope. Out of love, God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, into the world. Jesus lived the perfectly righteous life that we have failed to live. He then willingly died on the cross, bearing the judgment that sinners deserve. Three days later, God raised Him from the dead, demonstrating that sin and death had been defeated.
The Bible says:
“But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” — Romans 5:8 (ESV)
Through Jesus Christ, forgiveness of sins and reconciliation with God are freely offered.
Those who trust in Christ are forgiven of their sins and reconciled to God. They receive new spiritual life and begin the lifelong process of growing in holiness. Christians are not perfect people. They are people whom God is patiently transforming by His grace.
The gospel calls every person to respond. The Bible calls us to repent and believe. Repentance means turning away from sin and turning toward God. Faith means trusting in Jesus Christ alone for the forgiveness of sins and the gift of eternal life. Salvation is not something we earn through good works or religious effort. It is a gift of God’s grace.
“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.” — Ephesians 2:8 (ESV)
